Why did we decided to go to Guatemala?
The reason for our holiday was for Luke to meet my family, I was also dying to show him the beauty of my country, Guatemala, we also thought it would be a good idea to end our holiday somewhere in the Mexican Caribbean.
So, how did he get along with the fam?
After the initial introductions and despite the language barrier Luke got along great with my family. He fitted seamlessly into a house of all girls!
Time to see Guatemala!
Antigua
Our first stop, and the one place that we kept going back to was Antigua.
Antigua has a charm that has captivated tourists for decades! many who decide after a short trip to make Antigua their homes. There’s something about the atmosphere that makes you feel right at home when exploring the cobble stone streets.
The ruins are stunning and the streets vendors add that extra charm to this colonial city.
Lake Atitlán
Next stop. We headed to Lake Atitlán renowned as one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. We stayed at San Marcos, a quite lil town that we used as our base to explore all the other towns around the lake.
Lake Atitlán has so much to offer, beautiful views, vibrant Mayan Culture and some amazing locals. We learned about the ancient ways of making cacao and the art of weaving that has been passed down through generations.
Panajachel is the busiest town around the lake and that’s what makes it fun to explore. It’s shopping, restaurants and lake side views will keep you entertained.
Tikal
After Atitlán we decided to go to Tikal. We stayed at a place right next to the temples were we could hear the howler monkeys, spider monkeys, frogs and cicadas. Almost like listening to a meditation soundtrack.
We spent 2 days here enjoying the Jungle and relaxing in our hotel, and then as a last minute option we decided to go to El Remate, Petén.
Here we went kayaking around the lake and had fun finding ideal swimming spots, the water was emerald in the mid day sun. We went back to Guatemala for a few more visits to Antigua and to say goodbye to my gorgeous family.
Tulum
And just like that 4 weeks had gone past and it was time to do the final leg of our trip to the beautiful, tropical Maya Riviera. Tulum was everything I expected and more. Our hotel had the best bohemian vibe. Just what we needed before heading back to Sydney.
It was time to go back to Sydney but not without taking a bit of warmth, sunshine and palms in our hearts.
