Best things to do in Prague

Prague feels like a city straight out of a storybook. Gothic spires, ancient churches, cobblestone streets, hidden laneways and boats drifting across the Vltava river. It’s easily one of Europe’s most beautiful cities and has quickly become one of our favourite destinations. If you’re planning a trip, here are some of our personal picks for best things to do in Prague.

Where We Stayed

Fairmont Golden Prague
This is Prague’s newest 5 star hotel, set right on the river and just a few steps from the historic centre. The rooms have sweeping views over either the old town or the river. The spa is state of the art, and there is some amazing dinning options there but the real star is the rooftop terrace. Order a cocktail at sunset and you’ll get one of the best panoramic skyline views in the city. You can check out more of the Fairmont Golden Prague here

Best Areas to Stay in Prague

Prague is compact, but each neighbourhood has a different feel, from the main tourist spot Old Town square to quieter riverside spots where locals hang out. Here are a few areas we’d recommend:

Old Town (Staré Město)
If it’s your first time in Prague, staying in Old Town puts you right in the middle of the sights. You’ll be steps away from the Astronomical Clock, Charles Bridge, and winding cobblestone streets full of cafés and shops. It can get busy (and a little pricier), but you you’ll have the convenience, plus its perfect if you only have a couple of days. Hotel: Fairmont Golden Prague here

Malá Strana (Lesser Town, west side of Charles Bridge)
Across the river from Old Town, this area feels slightly quieter and more local but still close to all the sights. It’s full of Baroque buildings, hidden gardens, and cute streets that lead up to Prague Castle. If you like being able to walk home from a day of exploring but don’t want to sleep right in the middle of the tourist centre, this is a great pick. Hotel: The Bridge Residence

Prague 7 (Holešovice & Letná)
North of the centre, Prague 7 is more modern and creative, with trendy cafés, galleries, and a younger, local vibe. Letná Park is here too, which has one of the best sunset views in the city. It’s not as “fairy tale” as Old Town, but if you like staying where locals actually live, this is the spot. Hotel: Mama Shelter Prague

New Town (Nové Město)
Bordering Old Town, New Town has a mix of history and modern life. Wenceslas Square is here, along with lots of restaurants, shopping, and nightlife. It’s still central, but usually a bit more affordable than staying directly in Old Town. Hotel: W Prague

Tip: Prague’s public transport is excellent and cheap, so don’t worry too much about being right in the centre. You can get almost anywhere by tram or metro in under 15 minutes.

Favourite Places to Eat & Drink

Café Hrnek
A cosy brunch café with a rustic vintage vibe on the norther side of the river (Prague 7). The cinnamon and cardamom scrolls are the kind of thing you dream about months after leaving.

Kuchyň na Hradě
Up on the hill right next to Prague Castle, this place does Czech classics with style. Sit on the terrace, order svíčková or the check style roasted chicken, or just grab a Pilsner and soak up the views over the city.

Naše Maso
This tiny butcher’s deli serves some of the best sandwiches and burgers in Prague. It’s casual, affordable, and always busy with locals. Grab a fresh self pour Czech pilsner while you’re there. Naše Maso is by the same hospitality group behind Kuchyň na Hradě with some of the best restaurants around Prague. With over a dozen to different concepts to choose from if you’re hungry in Prague any of them are a good bet. Check out their full restaurant list and reservations here at Ambiente.

Things We Loved Doing in Prague

Vintage Tram 42
Instead of a tour bus, we hopped on Vintage Tram Loop 42. you just buy the ticket on the tram and its hop hop off to the cities main sights for the next 24 hours. The loop operates with some of Pragues most historic vintage trams. A perfect way to se the city in style

Sunset at Letná Park
Our favourite views of the city. From here you can see all the bridges lined up over the river. Pack a picnic or just wander up and watch the city turn golden and the lights flicker on. Check here for the exact maps spot with the best view point.

Old Town Bridge Tower
Another good sunset spot, especially if you want Charles Bridge in the frame. Climb up the tower and you’ll get a golden hour view straight out of a painting. you can get a double pass for both towers but the best view is from Old Town Bridge Tower where you get views over the bridge at sunset and also back ver the city as its illuminated in golden hour light.

Strahov Library
This place looks too perfect to be real. Frescoed ceilings, marble, gilded shelves like stepping inside a film set.

National Museum
Even if you don’t go for the exhibits, the building itself is worth the trip for its stunning architecture.

Vrtba Garden (Vrtbovská zahrada)
A quiet baroque garden tucked away from the busy streets. You can easily walk past and miss the entrance, not a lot of tourists find it, which makes it even better.

Park Legií
Riverside vibes with paddle boats, picnics, and a weekend beer garden with live music. It feels more local here, like you’re part of the city instead of just visiting.

A Few Tips for Prague

  • Prague is very walkable, but trams are great for longer distances. A 24 hour ticket covers all trams, buses, and metro.
  • The currency is Czech Koruna (CZK). Most places take cards, but having some cash is handy for small cafés and markets.
  • English is widely spoken, but it’s always nice to learn a couple of Czech words,  “Děkuji” (thank you) goes a long way.
  • If you’re here in winter, the Christmas markets in Old Town Square are some of the best in Europe.

Exploring Prague

While there are so many other amazing spots around Prague these are just a few of our favourites. What we loved most about Prague is how easy it is to wander around. You can plan all the big sights, but some of the best moments happen when you take a side street or discover a great new café. Between the food, the views, and hidden gardens, Prague is one of those timeless cities that will have you coming back to discover more.
