If you’ve been following our travels, you know we can’t get enough of the turquoise coastline of the South of France. But if we had to pick one “must do” activity that really captures the magic of the French Riviera, it’s the Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat coastal walk (Sentier Littoral in French).

There is something so special about this rocky peninsula. One minute you’re looking at luxury villas that make your jaw drop, and the next you’re climbing down a hidden ladder into the most crystal clear Mediterranean water you’ve ever seen.

If you’re a serious hiker or just want a scenic stroll to earn your glass of rosé, here is everything you need to know to make the most of this stunning coastal walk.

What to Expect

It feels like a front row seat to some of the most exclusive homes on the Riviera.. As you loop around the peninsula, you’ll pass through a mix of rugged limestone cliffs and manicured estate walls.

The best part? The access to the sea. Unlike many touristy beaches, the walk is dotted with tiny bays, stone jetties, and even ladders bolted into the rocks. It feels wild and secret, even though you’re just minutes from some of the world’s most expensive hotels.

Where to Start

You’ve got two options depending on your transport:

  1. The Marina (Port de Saint-Jean): This is the easiest spot if you’re arriving by bus (Line 15) or looking for a central parking spot.
  2. Plage Passable: There’s a dedicated car park here, and it’s a beautiful spot to begin if you want to end your walk near the harbor.

The Routes

There are a few ways to tackle the Sentier Littoral, depending on how much time and energy you have.

1. The Full Loop

  • The Route: Start at the Port de Saint-Jean Marina and head south, following the coastline all the way around the tip of the Cap until you reach Plage Passable. Around 5km it takes about 2-3hrs depending on how many photos or swims you have along the way.
  • The Finish: Reward yourself with a swim at Plage Passable it’s a lovely sandy beach with a restaurant/beach club.
  • Tip: Once you’re done at Passable, it’s only a 15-minute walk back over through the residential streets to get back to the Marina.

2. The Mini Version

If you’re short on time, we love this shortcut:

  • The Route: Start at Plage des Fossettes and walk counter clockwise toward Paloma Beach.
  • Why we love it: You end right near where you started. Just around the eastern corner at the end of Paloma Beach, there are some beautiful spots to jump off a jetty or use the rocky stairs to swim from. In the summer months Paloma beach also has a nice beach club and restaurant.

Essential Tips for Your Walk

A Quick Heads Up: Once you get started on the main trail, there aren’t many escape routes. Much of the path is bordered by the walls of private estates, so make sure you’re committed to the section you’re walking.

  • Footwear is key: The path can be stony, uneven, and the limestone rocks near the water are sharp. Leave the flip flops in your bag and wear a sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers.
  • Avoid the heat: The Riviera sun can be intense. We highly recommend starting in the early morning or late afternoon. Not only is it cooler, but the Golden Hour light hitting the cliffs is stunning.
  • Pack the essentials: There are no shops along the path itself. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and snacks.
  • Parking: Parking in Cap-Ferrat in the summer months can be tricky, the roads are narrow and spots limited. We suggest arriving early to get a spot, parking at the marina or a Plage Passable car park 1 or car park 2 (spots are limited)

Swiming spots we like around the Cap-Ferrat coastal walk

Some are beaches, some ladders or rustic stone step access into the sea. Take caution as the ocean here can get rough and the access to some of these swimming spots is uneven and rocky. I’ve made them as google map links so you can save the spots or just bookmark this post to come back to it.

Where to Stay & Eat

After all the walking, you’ve earned a bit of luxury. Cap Ferrat is home to some iconic spots.
